Third Stop: Köln (Cologne), Germany — A City of History, Ice Cream, River Views, and Stunning Sights
After a refreshing beach getaway in Timmendorfer Strand, our road trip brought us to the vibrant city of Köln (Cologne), Germany. We arrived late in the evening at the luxurious Hyatt Hotel, which offered stunning panoramic views of the city and the majestic Cologne Cathedral. The excitement was palpable as we settled in, eager to explore the city the next day. Here’s how we spent a sun-filled, action-packed day in this beautiful German city!
Arrival in Köln: A Warm Welcome with a View
After a scenic drive, we checked into the Hyatt, located right on the banks of the River Rhine. The hotel’s panoramic views were absolutely stunning, offering a sweeping vista of the city’s skyline, with the Cologne Cathedral as the centerpiece.
It was the perfect place to unwind after a long journey. Though we arrived late in the evening, the sight of Köln’s shimmering skyline and the gentle flow of the Rhine River made us excited for the day ahead.

Breakfast at Sticky Fingers: A Delicious Start with River Views
We kicked off our sunny day in Köln with a delightful breakfast at Sticky Fingers Restaurant at the Hyatt. The restaurant, perched right by the River Rhine, offered a breathtaking view of the glistening water as boats drifted by — the perfect backdrop for a leisurely meal. The morning sun bathed the room in soft light, and the cozy atmosphere made it feel like the perfect place to unwind before hitting the streets.
For breakfast, I opted for a refreshing matcha latte, paired with a crisp and flavorful salad — light yet satisfying, just what I needed to fuel up for a day of exploring. My daughter, on the other hand, was craving something hearty and went for a delicious burger that was perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. The food was fresh, flavorful, and set us up for the adventure ahead.
Sipping our drinks and enjoying the view, we couldn’t help but feel excited for the day ahead — Köln was calling!

Exploring Köln: Ice Cream, River Views, and the Iconic Cathedral
After breakfast, we set out to explore the lively streets of Köln, which were already buzzing with energy under the bright sunshine. The weather was hot, and a cool treat was a must, so we stopped for some refreshing ice cream as we wandered through the city.

River Rhine Views & Boat Watching
One of the highlights of our day was strolling along the banks of the River Rhine. The river provided a stunning backdrop as we watched boats gently glide by, offering a different perspective of the city. There’s something special about a city that’s built along a river — the peaceful flow of water adds to the charm, and we enjoyed walking along the promenade, taking in views of the bridges and boats passing beneath.
The Cologne Cathedral: A Must-See Landmark
Of course, no trip to Köln would be complete without a visit to the world-famous Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom). This towering Gothic masterpiece is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Europe. We stood in awe of its intricate details and impressive spires. We spent some time exploring the area around the cathedral and couldn’t resist taking a few photos of its stunning façade. The sheer size and beauty of the cathedral are truly humbling — it’s hard to capture its grandeur in a single photo!

A Sunny Stroll Through the Old Town
As the day wore on, the heat picked up, and we decided to continue our exploration along the river. The sun was shining brightly, and the city felt alive with people enjoying the warm weather. We found a quiet spot along the water to relax and enjoy the view, watching the boats pass by and soaking up the atmosphere.

Next, we wandered through Köln’s Old Town (Altstadt) with its cobblestone lanes, colorful houses, and quaint cafes. This area is a wonderful place to explore at a leisurely pace.
